The winners of this year’s Asian Curry Awards – dubbed the “Curry Oscars” were announced at a glittering gala dinner and presentation attended by 1200 VIP guests on Sunday 17 November. Held at the Grosvenor House in London’s Mayfair, the evening was hosted by BBC news anchor Samantha Simmonds with honourable guest speakers including the Parliamentary Minister for Business and Trade Sarah Jones MP, and Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Rushanara Ali MP.
The award winners were chosen from all over the UK by the Asian Catering Federation’s esteemed panel of judges from a list of finalists voted for by the spice loving public.
The awards cover fine dining, casual dining, street food, and the complete range of Asian and Oriental cuisines. Top national accolades went to Kahani in London’s Sloane Square which was crowned Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year, and individual cuisine awards went to Sushi Mama in Manchester, for Japanese Restaurant of the Year, and Hakkasan in London which won top Chinese Restaurant.
Head chef Shamim Cowdhury from Aramintas in Northampton was also presented with a top Chef award and named as the Asian Curry Awards Chef of the Year; and Mohammad Sultan of Charcoals in Glasgow was crowned this year’s Curry King.
Regionally, the awards for best Asian Restaurant of the Year were scooped by some of the nation’s favourites including Achari (Bristol), Raval (Newcastle), Light of Bengal (Aberdeen), Bangla (Bangor), Mint Leaf Lounge (City of London), Navadhanya (Cambridge) and both The International restaurants in Bradford.
Best newcomers included Madhu’s Brasserie (Richmond), Guru Ji (Fleet), Panas Falcon (Welling), My Indian (Ammanford), the new Colonel Saab ( Trafalgar Square) and The Bank in Chorleywood.
Speaking at the awards Mr Yawar Khan, Chairman of the Asian Catering Federation said: “It is with immense pride that we present these awards each year. The success of every business here tonight is down to the passion, determination and culinary talent that drives this industry forward. Congratulations to all tonight’s winners and huge thanks to everyone who invests in our industry which continues to contribute billions to the UK economy each year despite the challenging economic climate.”
